Dr. Audrey Remedios

Veterinary Surgeon

Even as a young child, Dr. Audrey Remedios always wanted to become a veterinarian. After finishing her veterinary degree, she completed a surgical residency and Master of Veterinary Science program at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Remedios joined the faculty of WVCM and successfully passed the certifying examinations to become a surgery specialist both in large and small animals as designated by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS Board Certified in Surgery). At WCVM, she taught numerous veterinary students, interns, and residents, published many scientific papers, investigated the use of minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy and thoracoscopy) in small animals, and established the use of total hip replacements in patients in western Canada.

After 9 years, she moved to Calgary and established the Western Veterinary Specialist Centre. In 2000, she was the first veterinarian to introduce and establish the use of the TPLO technique to stabilize cruciate injuries in dogs in Alberta and western Canada. She started and developed the small animal surgery program in the newly established University of Calgary School of Veterinary Medicine and taught there for 5 years. Recently, Dr. Remedios was also designated as an ACVS Founding Fellow in minimally invasive surgery in small animal soft tissue surgery. Through seminars, laboratories and webinars, she continues to teach and mentor veterinarians on soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.

Today, Dr. Remedios is in private practice in Calgary. She also provides care for the animals from many rescue groups such as the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force, AARCS, and Cochrane. Under the auspices of Veterinarians Without Borders, she is currently helping to develop an animal health program for the Canadian arctic.
