What are the signs of dental problems in cats and dogs?

Tartar accumulation, inflamed/swollen gums, bad breath, bleeding, or even changes in appetite and eating habits (e.g. difficulty and pain while chewing) are some of the warning signs that you should look out for. If you notice any of these manifestations, please contact our team so that we can reduce your pet’s discomfort and identify the underlying health issues they may have.

What types of canine and feline dental services are offered at your hospital?

Our team provides dental scaling and polishing, dental radiographs, and dental extractions – all of which are performed under general anesthesia. We also offer preventive care counselling with tooth brushing demonstrations and provide a range of oral supplements and dental diets that are part of daily oral hygiene care.

What is involved in a dental cleaning procedure?

Different patients may require additional steps; but typical dental cleaning procedures begin with administering full general anesthesia to your pet. By doing so, this both controls pain and stress, as well as allows the dental cleaning to be performed as efficiently as possible. Then, dental radiographs, charting, scaling, polishing and an assessment for any areas that need further treatment are conducted.

How often should I brush my dog’s/ cat’s teeth?

We know it can be a challenge in terms of time and effort, but we recommend brushing your pet’s teeth daily. With training and consistency, you can get your pet accustomed to their regular dental routine.

How do I brush my dog’s/ cat’s teeth?

Toothbrushing is best taught early! See here for what toothbrushing looks like for both cats and dogs. When you come in for a dental appointment, ask us about how to get your pet used to brushing their teeth.

Why is oral and dental health important?

Oral health is one of the key markers of your pet’s health. Manifestations of oral or dental problems can result in or be caused by other health problems and conditions. For this reason, it is vital that your dog, cat or other pet has an appropriate oral hygiene program. Diet, supplements, appropriate chew items, and regular brushing work in combination with regular oral exams and dental cleanings to protect not only your pet’s oral health, but their overall wellness.
